Africa needs renewable energy

Africa needs renewable energy –Report

Stories by Olabisi Olaleye
A new report commissioned by IHS Towers, the largest mobile telecommunications infrastructure provider in Africa, Europe and the Middle East, has disclosed that Africa must deliver a renewable power revolution as happened with telecommunications, to reach its ambitious targets.
According to the report themed, “Power Up, Delivering Renewable Energy in Africa,” written by the Economist Intelligence Unit highlights examples of successful renewable energy projects across the continent and identifies barriers and promoters of success within the sector.
Commenting, IHS Towers co-founder and Interim IHS Nigeria CEO, Mohamad Darwish, said: “This report reaffirms that sub-Saharan Africa has the raw ingredients for a vibrant renewable energy market: resource abundance, falling costs of wind turbines and solar panels, smart innovations in end-user equipment and political commitment – by governments and international donors alike.”
Meanwhile, the report reiterated that the  key findings include renewables, which must play a greater role in Africa’s energy mix. The case for building renewable energy infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa is stronger than ever and positive experiences in lead markets such as South Africa and Kenya highlight successful strategies and best practices. However, Africa requires up to $90 billion of investment annually to meet its current energy shortfall. The African renewables sector resembles the mobile phone sector of a decade ago. It has the capacity to leapfrog heavy infrastructure with a larger-than-assumed market, the emergence of smart business models and improved technology. However, long-term renewable procurement programmes are needed to build the greenfield infrastructure necessary. There has been huge growth in technology sales and financing innovation. The market for pico-solar units has grown from almost zero in 2009 to 4.5 million in 2014 and, in January 2016, Africa saw its first solar bonds, a securitisation financial product for small scale off-grid solar projects. Ambitious energy targets are not enough. Investors are carefully assessing the technical capacity of host governments, the country’s infrastructure track record and the connection between renewable targets and economic needs.
The report finds that a 680 per cent increase in net renewables capacity deployment is needed if Africa is to achieve the African Renewable Energy Initiative’s ambitious goal of 300 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 agreed by the African Union (AU) and member governments at the recent Paris climate talks. Innovative tools and projects are helping to bring green energy to people beyond the traditional grid.
However, there is no substitute for larger infrastructure programmes such as wind and solar farms. The report, which includes over 28 expert interviews, fieldwork and reportage from Nigeria, Uganda and Zambia, suggests four measures to attract increased investment in renewables projects and ensure their success – governments should target subsidies that protect the poor while not deterring investors with artificially low tariffs; more transparent and harmonised regulations are required to support private sector decision-making; improved border customs efficiency will help to reduce costs and improve construction and maintenance times by making it easier to move technology and equipment in and out of landlocked countries; and attention should be focused on government-led comprehensive renewable procurement programmes, rather than relying on one-off investments.

President Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari is certainly not happy with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, over what he called ”the ruthless devaluation of the Naira.”
President Buhari expressed his indignation at the current rate of the naira to the dollar while speaking at the Ramadan breaking of fast with members of the business community led by Mr Kola Jamodu, on Monday.
The president condemned “the ruthless devaluation of naira,’’ saying that he was yet to be convinced about the economic benefits of the exercise.
“How much benefits have we derived from naira devaluation in the past?
“I don’t like the returns I get from the CBN because that coupled with the demand that let us devalue the naira. In August 1985, the naira was N1.3k to a dollar, now you need N300 or N350 to a dollar.
“What do we derive from that, how much benefit can we derive from this ruthless devaluation of the naira?
“I’m not an economist neither a businessman, I fail to appreciate the economic explanation.
“What has happened to us now is that we have maneuvered ourselves into a mono-economy which led to the collapse we are seeing now.
“A lot of responsibilities now fall on your shoulders. You have a lot of investments, a lot of people you employ,’’ he told the businessmen.
He also assured them that his administration would make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice production within 18 months, adding that 13 states of the federation had been identified for the production of the crop.
He said the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh, had already been briefed on how best to achieve the target.
Buhari decried the way and manner the nation’s scarce resources were wasted on the importation of food items by the previous regimes.
He said the nation had no option than to concentrate more on agriculture and solid mineral activities.
In his remarks on behalf of the business community, Mr Kola Jamodu, expressed the readiness of the private sector to partner the administration in addressing the economic challenges facing the country.
He thanked the president for inviting them for the breaking of fast dinner.

Militants shoot at Ogun dep. governor, security chiefs

Trip aborted as soldiers return fire
State demands Task Force
Suspected militants that have been tormenting communities in Ogun State yesterday prevented a convoy led by Deputy Governor Mrs. Yetunde Onanuga from accessing a part of Ebute-Ibafo in Obafemi Owode local government.
In the entourage were Bridgade Commander, 35 Artillery Army Bridgade, Alamala Barack, Abeokuta, Brigadier – General Mohammed Danqalis, the Director of the Department of State Service(DSS), Ogun state Command, Mr Kabiru Sanni, Deputy Commissioner of Police(Operations), Mr Bello Makwashi, Secretary to the State Government Taiwo Adeoluwa, Commisdioner for Information and Orientation, Dayo Adeneye, the Baale of Ebute – Ibafo, Chief Afolorunsho Balogun, the Olu of Imusin, Oba Taiwo Adebunmi Bamgbose and five other traditional rulers.
As the team approached the creek through which the militants usually follow to escape after attacking the Ebute – Ibafo community, the militants shot at them sporadically from the creek. The soldiers and the police in the team returned fire. The trip was aborted.
Secretary to the State Government Adeoluwa urged the Federal Government to urgently constitute a military task force like the one in the Niger Delta to tackle the militants.
“This level of team led by the deputy governor cannot access a part of our state. It means without mincing words, the Federal Government needs to get involved in this.
“This is clearly beyond the capacity of the police. This is something which we believe in Ogun state, a major task force, military operation task force like the one we have in Niger Delta is necessary and desirable now.
“We  all can see, we were in Elepete, Igbo Olomu, Imagbon, Imuti, nothing compared to the violence there. You all heard the shooting, this is something that should be a source of worry to everybody and we think the Federal Government should come to our aid,” Adeoluwa said.
Earlier during a visit to other communities under the militants’ attack, Mrs Onanuga appealed to hundreds  of fleeing indigenes and residents of the five communities to return home.
She said measures had been put in place to protect them from further attacks and killings by suspected Niger Delta militants.
In the last one week, five of Imusin’s 27 communities in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun state had come under grave attacks by the suspected militants, resulting in the death of over a dozen villagers and destruction of their properties.
The affected communities visited are: Imagbon, Elepete, Igbo – Olomu, Imuti and later Ebute – Ibafo.
Addressing the Olu of Imusin, Oba Taiwo Bamgbose, and a handful of his people at Igbo Olomu, one of the scenes of the killings of several of the villagers on June 17,  Mrs Onanuga assured that the killers would be brought to justice.
But in a twist of fate, while the Deputy Governor was still addressing the distressed villagers to convey the government’s message of hope and sympathy, information soon came in that a member of the community, Sarafa Olayinka, had just been abducted by the militants and taken to the creek.
Also, the Baale of Ebute – Ibafo, Chief Folorunsho Balogun, while still narrating his community’s ordeal in the hands of the militants to the  state government’s representatives earlier, said he too had received a message that his subjects – Alhaji Odugbesan and his wife, had been abducted by the militants.
Chief Balogun said the militants invaded his community three days ago, killed people,  attacked a bakery and carted away loaves of bread.
He also said some beautiful women were abducted from the community.
According to him, even domestic animals – goats and chickens-were not spared during the onslaught as many of them found roaming the streets were shot and taken away by the militants.

Workers kick as Dickson extends HoS, perm sec’s tenure

Workers kick as Dickson extends HoS, perm sec’s tenure

Simon Utebor, Yenagoa
The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have kicked against the decision of the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, to extend the service of the retired Head of Service, Dr. Peter Singabele, by six months.
Other groups that have joined the labour unions to criticise the extension are the Bayelsa First Initiative and the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Bayelsa State chapter.
But a statement sent through the office of the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, had said the extension of Singabele’s appointment was in exercise of the governor’s executive powers.
The statement quoted the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Serena Dokubo-Spiff, as saying that the extension was informed by the numerous important ongoing service-related issues being handled by Singabele.
It said allowing the retired Singabele “to leave the service now” could be detrimental to the administration’s programme of repositioning the civil service for greater efficiency.
Dickson had also extended the appointment of Mr. Joseph Akedesuo as Permanent Secretary and Head of State Protocol Services for a period of one year.
Apart from the opposition by the NLC and other groups, the action of the governor was said to be causing bad blood among the permanent secretaries and other senior civil servants, who allegedly accused Dickson of violating the civil service rules.
The NLC and TUC called on Dickson to appoint a new HoS to fill the exalted vacant position with immediate effect.
The state NLC Chairman, Mr. Ndiomu Bipre, and his TUC counterpart, Mr. Tari Dounana, in a statement, warned against the politicisation of the HoS office in the state.
According to them, no HoS stays in office beyond the retirement age of 60 or 35 years, whichever is applicable.
They said, “The continuous stay of the current Head of …Read More

Parties, ex-legislators differ on age limit for contestants June 12, 2016

Parties, ex-legislators differ on age limit for contestants

JOHN ALECHENU
The bill seeking to reduce the age limit for Nigerians aspiring to be elected as presidents and governors from the current 40 years and above to 30 and above,  has elicited divergent views from a cross section of the political class.
While some consider the development a healthy one, others expressed reservations on the intent and workability of the bill if it became law.
There was no consensus among those interviewed by SUNDAY PUNCH across party lines on Saturday.
Speaking on the issue, Sen. Danladi Sankara, who was a member of the 7th Senate expressed support for proposals contained in the bill.
He explained that youths who accounted for the greater percentage of Nigeria’s population should be given a greater say in shaping their future.
Sankara explained that modern trends favoured the kind of reviews being canvassed in the bill.
The ex-lawmaker said, “This is the way to go. For example, today if you are looking for those to employ in sectors like banking you look for young and energetic people. Most 40-year-olds today will find it difficult to get such employment except in cases where they have unmatched experience.
“I am in my 60s now and if I were to be in the National Assembly like I was in the 7th Senate, I will support the bill.
“It is not a matter of people who were in government yesterday, today and will want to remain there tomorrow. It will not be wrong to try something and some people new if that will bring sanity to the system.”
However, Dr. Junaid Mohammed disagreed. According to him, those pushing for the bill are individuals who are seeking for personal gain.
He said, “I think they (lawmakers) are trying to be copy cats of a system which has nothing to do with us. In terms of an individual’s capacity for success in every human endeavour, there is more to a sense of responsibility and quality of judgement  than just someone’s age.
“As far as I am concerned, they should look for something else to do instead of wasting people’s time. This is not Britain, this is not America, this not Europe or Britain.
“In China, there are quite a number of persons in their 60s and 70s and they have more achievements to their names instead of their age. Our legislators in the House are only seeking to clear the way for themselves.”
It was gathered that the issue had not come up for discussions at party level either within the All Progressives Congress or the Peoples Democratic Party.
However, the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Mr. Segun Oni, said at a personal level, the issue of age limit was a non issue when national development was at stake.
According to him, the electorate should be encouraged and enlightened to make informed decisions to vote for the right persons into office irrespective of their biological age.
He said, “Personally, I don’t believe in this issue of age limits. If the electorate wants to vote a 21-year-old person into office as a result of his pedigree why must he/she be prevented?
“The age thing is just in theory because there are some things that someone who is too young may not have. Despite that, we must not shut them (the young) out. I don’t believe in shutting people out on account of their age. The question to ask is does the person seeking for office have what it takes to deliver?”
Speaking in a similar vein, former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abdullahi Jalo, said, “The PDP, as you know and Nigerians know, is a party that respects the laws of this country. If any law is properly passed we will obey it.
“What is more important for us is a situation where every Nigerian will be carried along. The country is made up of all of us, men, women, children. We all need one another to succeed.
“You need the wisdom of the old and the vibrancy of the youths to build society. To the best of my knowledge, our focus in the party now is our forth coming convention the issue of the bill has not come up for discussions.”

Tragedy struck Nigerian football again early on Saturday morning, when former Super Eagles coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amodu Shuaibu, died in his sleep in Benin City, Edo State.
His death came just three days after another ex-national team coach and close friend of Amodu, Stephen Keshi, died in the same town.
Amodu’s corpse was deposited at the morgue of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin City, before he was buried on Saturday evening in his hometown Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area, according to Muslim rites.
Present during the interment was Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole;  NFF Secretary General, Mohammed Sanusi; Chairman, Edo State Football Association, Frank Ilaboya; community leaders and residents of the community.
The former Super Eagles coach is survived by his wife, eight children, and an aged mother.
Amodu’s eldest son Abdul-Aziz said his father gave a hint of his death during their last conversation on Friday.
Abdul-Aziz, a 26-year-old graduate from Igbinedion University, Okada, said, “I am getting set for the National Youth Service Corps programme this month. So, I called him (Amodu) yesterday (Friday) to discuss with him but he didn’t pick my call. He called back and told me that he was very busy. He promised to come to Okpella today (Saturday), so that we could see.
“He briefly said something about death when I asked about (Stephen) Keshi. He said Keshi was not buried immediately because he was not a Muslim. He told me that if he died he would be buried immediately. Then today, I got the news that he was dead,” Amodu’s son told SUNDAY PUNCH.
Abdul-Aziz said he was shocked when he received the news of his father’s death.
“We were not even told that he was taken to a hospital. He doesn’t fast naturally. For the past few years, he stopped fasting due to his health condition. I don’t know what happened this year that he decided to fast. When I asked him about fasting, he said he just felt like he could do it,” Abdul-Aziz added.
Speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH, Amodu’s cousin, Akuri Afegbua, said the former Eagles coach died after complaints of chest pain and his inability to get the money NFF owed him, adding that his financial status had made it difficult for him to take care of himself and his immediate family.
As the federation’s technical director, Amodu was reportedly on N800,000 per month but without an office and official accommodation.
Afegbua said Amodu had travelled to Benin to demand for the payment of his outstanding entitlements.
“I think he died of frustration due to his financial status. He was not paid (by the NFF). He was complaining of not being paid and had no money to maintain himself and his immediate family. I think the purpose of his being in Benin was to put in a bill for his payment, (from) both the NFF and the state government,” the cousin said.
“We were together on Friday. In the afternoon, he called to say that he was feeling some pains on the left side of his chest and he called in a doctor. The doctor checked his blood pressure; he had 140 over 100. The doctor told him it was not bad, that he could continue with his fasting,” Afegbua said.
He also noted that the ex-Eagles coach was full of life on Friday when he assisted one of his uncles to secure a bail at a police station. He added that it was shocking when they found Amodu dead at about 4am on Saturday.
“Apart from his complaint of chest pains, he was perfectly okay. We came back on Saturday morning to wake him up but found him dead,” Afegbua said.
Ex-international Peterside Idah has said the Nigeria Football Federation owes the late coach seven months’ salary.
South Africa-based Peterside, a football pundit and close friend of the late ex-Eagles coach, wrote on his tweeter handle that Amodu told him he was owed seven months’ pay by the NFF.
“NFF please pay the ones that are alive; got a call from him that he has not been paid for about seven months,” Peterside tweeted.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has said it would hold a joint executive committee meeting in honour of Keshi and Amodu.
The General Secretary of the NFF, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, stated this when he led a delegation of the football body to the residence of the former Eagles coach in Okpella.
Sanusi said, “Definitely, it is going to be a joint meeting, since that (burial) of Keshi has not taken place. So, it is going to be a joint one. We are in a very sorrowful moment now. Nobody is in any mood to attend to anything; everybody is sad and down. But I believe by the time people start getting themselves back, we will call for a meeting and chat a way forward.
“These are heroes and we will do as much as possible to try to immortalise our heroes and their efforts will not be in vain.”
